The Rushdie Affair: Cultures at Cross Purposes

The controversy over Salman Rushdie’s novel, The Satanic Verses,2 has been a major flashpoint in the tensions between Muslims and Westerners in recent years.3 I shall first make some comments about the book itself and Rushdie’s intent, since this has not received as much attention as it deserves.4 Then I consider how the affair touches on vital nerves by setting against each other two foundational cultural concerns or ‘sacralities’, as I shall call them. Finally, I suggest some possible ways forward.
